Physician Focus, February 2008: Ready or Not? Emergency Preparedness
Ready or Not? Emergency Preparedness
We live in a world today when disaster can strike at any time. The threats of bioterrorism, chemical spills, flu and infectious disease pandemics, natural disasters and severe weather are real and frightening. The destruction of the World Trade Center in New York and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast, along with the threats of avian flu and other infectious diseases, have given rise to a new focus on emergency preparedness.
How prepared are we for such events? What should be the roles of the Federal, State and local governments and the medical professions? And what can individuals and families do to increase their preparedness?
Paul Biddinger, M.D., Chairman of the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Preparedness, Director of Pre-Hospital Care and Disaster Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital; Lisa Stone, M.D., Massachusetts Department of Public Health
